Essential duties and responsibilities

  • Participate in the design and construction of new (and renovated, once the aquarium is open) systems, maintenance, and appearance of display tanks, including materials and survival equipment.
  • Assist with strategic planning, exhibition planning, facilities planning and implementation of department goals.
  • Develop and implement standard aquarium water quality and operating procedures in accordance with industry practices, safety protocols, standards and guidelines established by the aquarium, government agencies and regulators.
  • Implement the preventive maintenance system for equipment and systems.
  • Supervise daily operations of life support and water supply systems.
  • Perform cleaning duties, water changes, backwashing, and other procedures necessary to service and maintain water and equipment quality standards.
  • Perform water quality testing as well as coordinate contact tank coliform testing and any other water quality testing required.
  • Provide daily, weekly and monthly water quality testing and biogeochemical monitoring as required.
  • Supervise a team of 2 technicians and work in collaboration with a team of aquarists.
  • Provide day-to-day management of operation and maintenance tasks.
  • Supervise and evaluate staff performance.
  • Oversee record keeping and documentation of life support systems and water quality, compile data and prepare reports, identify, and analyze results to make recommendations or adjustments based on data and trends.
  • Participate in the preparation of the department's budget; forecast, plan, and monitor operating expenses.
  • Prepare specifications and scope of working documents.
  • Read and implement operating instruction manuals and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Perform other related tasks.

Requirements and qualifications

  • A minimum of 3-5 years of relevant work experience required in the life of aquatic animals in a private or public aquarium.
  • Technical diploma in water treatment or similar program or bachelor’s degree in chemical or industrial engineering.
  • Experience in the design/implementation of life support systems would be a plus.
  • Must have work experience in a related technical field, such as wastewater treatment or marine engineering.
  • Must have a working knowledge of freshwater and saltwater chemistry and how it relates to aquatic animals, to measure the required water quality.
  • Must have the ability to diagnose and repair life support system equipment or similar industrial mechanical equipment including ozone generators, centrifugal pumps, heat exchangers, air compressors, automated controls, and all types of filtration systems.
  • Must be very computer knowledgeable with a solid understanding of MS Windows.
  • Must be a team-oriented individual with excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • A valid driver's license.

Type of position : Permanent, full-time job.

Schedule

    • Usually 40 hrs/week
    • Must be able to work a flexible and rotating schedule, including a combination of day, evening, and night shifts on a regular basis as required. May require work on holidays and weekends depending on the needs of the establishment.
    • Ability to respond to system emergencies, sometimes after normal working hours, as they arise.
